The Asawase Community Center in the Asokore Mampong Municipal Assembly of the Ashanti Region has been close down. The Center is to be shut from Friday, July 8.
This was contained in a letter issued by the Assembly. Speaking to TV3’s William Evans Nkum on Friday, the Municipal Chief Executive, Alhaji Nurudeen Hamidan said preliminary investigations by the police have established the cause of Thursday’s stampede.
The stampede, which occurred immediately after an Eid ul-Fitr jamboree, led to the death of nine revelers, six of whom were men. Six others, who were in critical conditions, are on admission at the Manhyia Government Hospital.
Alhaji Hamidan said the Municipal Security Council (MUSEC) will continue investigations into the disaster.
The organizers, he said, have been identified and they will aid in investigations. “For us, we will have to allow the security agents to do an independent job,” he stressed.
Meter blew off The MCE opened up on what really caused the stampede, disclosing that an electricity meter at the Center blew off. The sound was mistaken by the patrons for a gunshot.
This he said forced most of them to run out. Unfortunately, he continues, some fell in a gutter outside the Center and were run over by the thousands who were also running for cover.
“The stampede actually happened outside the premises,” he stressed. The dead were buried on Thursday in accordance with Islamic rites.
