Asikuma Assembly honours 11 students, Education Director

Breman Asikuma (C/R), March 7, GNA - The Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa District Assembly has honoured 11 students for their performance in the 2004 Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE).

Mr Smapson Kwame Anfako, District Chief Executive, presented an amount of 300,000 cedis to each of the students at the 48th Independence Day celebration at Asikuma in the Central Region. The DCE said the amount was to motivate and encourage students to take their studies seriously.

Mrs Janet Lassey, District Director of Education also received a half piece of wax-print for her supervisory role that had helped in improving the quality of education in the area. He said the District Assembly decided to honour the students and the Director because the District jumped from 104 to 68 in the 2004 National Examination league results in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

While in 2003 only one student got six ones, in 2004 one student got nine ones, three with seven ones and five had six ones. The DCE stressed that in 2004 Senior Secondary School examinations Miss Victoria Nyakoh from Breman Asikuma Secondary School and Miss Philomena Obeng of Odoben Secondary School had aggregate seven and eleven respectively.

He expressed satisfaction that the construction classrooms, provision of furniture and other teaching materials by the government had yielded positive results in the District.

Mr Anfako said the Assembly was sponsoring 80 teacher trainees who would be posted to the District.

Mr Anfako noted that the contractor working on the Asikuma town roads as well as the one on the Breman Kuntanase/Agona Bobikuma road had abandoned their projects and said that action was being taken against them.

He said work on the Anyinabrim-Baako raod through Anhwiam was progressing but at a slow pace while the first phase for the resurfacing of the five-kilometre Brakwa/Odoben road had been completed and handed over to the government.

Mrs Lassey advised teachers and parents to do their best to lift the quality of education in the area.

She praised the Assembly for honouring them and pledged to strengthen the inspectorate division of the Ghana Education Service to ensure better results this year.
