Nkwanta (V/R), July 10, GNA - Mr J.K. Opoku-Esau, a government appointee of the Nkwanta District Assembly collapsed in the Assembly and died shortly after announcing a compromise decision that one Mr P.C. Ninsaw should act as Presiding Member until August this year. The Position of Presiding Member became vacant following the death in May this year of Mr J.B. Machator.
The Assembly has adjourned indefinitely.
At the Assembly sitting on Monday, two motions were tabled to either fill a vacant position between now and August as a temporary measure, or that the standing orders of the Assembly regarding the election of a new Presiding Member be followed to the letter. As the debate ensued on the motions, members were asked by the Deputy Volta Regional Minister, Mr Joseph Nayan, also a member, to go out and come back with a final decision. On their return, Mr Opoku-Esau, who was appointed the spokesman, had hardly finished conveying the members' decision when he collapsed in his chair and was pronounced dead on arrival at the Nkwanta district hospital.
