Nkoranza (B/A), June 12, GNA - Mr James Kwabena Appiah-Awuah, Nkoranza District Chief Executive, has reiterated that the district assembly concept was aimed at bringing governance to the doorsteps of the people in the spirit of participatory democracy.
He was addressing members of the Assembly at a three-day orientation workshop organized by the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Environment to educate them on their roles and responsibilities.
He urged them to interact with and to respect the views and opinions of their electorate to enable their challenges and problems to be brought to the attention of the Assembly. The DCE advised the assembly members to collaborate with traditional authorities, unit committees and religious leaders to jointly mobilize the people to initiate and complete development programmes.
Mr Appiah-Awuah advised them to educate the people about the need to pay tax to enable the Assembly to develop the District and to bury their political differences since they represented the people. Nana Kwadwo Peprah, a retired civil servant and leader of the resource team at the workshop, advised the assembly members to encourage the people to live in decent surroundings to avoid contracting communicable diseases.
Mr Kwaku Aduse-Poku, a resource person and a retired educationist, called for the prudent use of the Assembly's funds on projects that would benefit the people.
He called for the involvement of opinion leaders in the planning of development programmes.
Mr Isaac Kwasi Adjei, a retired educationist, who spoke on: "The roles and functions of assembly members", urged the assembly members to educate the people about government policies so that they could help in their implementation.
Mr George Kofi Busia, Presiding Member, commended the organizers of the workshop and urged the assembly members to be conversant with the chapters of the Assembly model standing orders.
