Assembly members urged to strategise for more revenue

Mrs. Cecilia Johnson, Chairperson of the Council of State Mrs. Cecilia Johnson, Chairperson of the Council of State

Mrs. Cecilia Johnson, Chairperson of the Council of State has urged members of Sunyani Municipal Assembly to strategise to generate more revenue for the development of the Municipality.

Mrs. Johnson gave the advice at the inauguration of the 50-member Sunyani Municipal Assembly, consisting of 34 newly-elected and 16 Government Appointees on Tuesday in Sunyani.

She said the reliance on District Assembly Common Fund (DACF) by some Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) for developmental purposes had not achieved the desired impact for such Assemblies.

The Council of State Chairperson therefore enjoined the members to unite in assisting the Assembly to raise the needed revenue to complement the Common Fund in financing more development projects.

Mrs. Johnson said the decentralisation concept as enshrined in the Local Government Act of 1993 required of Assembly Members (AMs) to be dedicated and committed in their contributions to ensure fruitful decisions, devoid of partisan politics at Assembly meetings.

She therefore emphasised the need for the AMs to protect and promote the supreme interest of the electorate but not their personal interest.

In a welcoming address, Mr. Kwasi Oppong Ababio, Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sunyani expressed the hope that the re-elected AMs would impart the knowledge of their experiences pertaining to the Assembly procedures to their newly-elected colleagues.

The AMs were later sworn into office by Mr. Fred Obikyere, a Magistrate at the Sunyani Municipal Magistrate Court.
