Mr Divine Bosson, Volta Regional Director, National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), has called on assembly members in the Region to undertake regular clean-up exercises ahead of the rainy season.
He said such pragmatic measures would prevent disasters, especially floods as the rains set in.
The Regional Director in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Ho said flood situations in the country could be reduced to the barest minimum if proper mechanisms are put in place.
Mr Bosson said the Organization is working to ensure a disaster-resilient region and called for support from the citizenry.
He also called on traditional authorities to educate the people on the need to avoid acts that could cause disasters so that the Region would accelerate its socio-economic development efforts.
Mr Bosson said it is important for traditional authorities to organize the people to plant trees to serve as windbreaks to protect the communities against heavy storms.
He urged the traditional authorities to ensure that people who engaged in indiscriminate felling of trees and set fire to bushes were given severe punishments to serve as a deterrent to others.
