Assembly woman calls for salary for assembly members

The newly elected Assembly woman for the Nkurakan Electoral Area in the Yilo Krobo Municipality, Madam Evelyn Teiko Asenih has called for the introduction of salaries for members of the Metropolitan, Municipal and Distict Assemblies in the country.

She explained that payment of monthly allowances or salaries by the Assembly would help the Assembly members to do their work effectively.

Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at the inauguration of new Assembly members at Somanya, Madam Asenih explain that the work of an Assembly member is very tedious and challenging because most often, they leave their businesses to attend to their duties in the Assembly and the community as a whole.

She said some members of the communities come to them with their financial problems and the Assembly member will have to support them but because they do not receive any allowance or salary from the municipal or district assembly was difficult to assist.

Madam Asinih said she believed that if members of the assembly are given monthly allowances, it will encourage more dedicated women to join the assembly and that will help boost the effectiveness of the assembly.

She explained that anything entrusted to a woman is done effectively that is why she thinks there should be an attractive package for the assembly members especially the women.
