Assin Nusuaem (C/R), Jan. 10, GNA- The Assin South District Directorate of Education is organizing vacation classes for the final year students of both public and private Junior High Schools (JHS) in the District to prepare
them adequately for the Basic Education Certificate Examinations in April. One thousand six hundred and three candidates from 57 public schools and 175 from five private JHS are attending the week-long classes. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Assin Nsuaem, Ms. Helena Arkoh District Director of Education said the poor performance of schools in 2007 BECE in which seven schools scored zero percent in the examination compelled the Directorate to organize the classes. Ms. Arkoh said the students had been grouped into 40 classes and were being taught by 200 teachers drawn from the staff of the District Directorate of Education, Junior High Schools and Senior High Schools (SHS) in the District. The District Education Director commended the teachers for accepting to go and stay in some remotest areas of the District for one week to help the students to pass their examination. She also commended chiefs for providing accommodation for the teachers. She was also grateful to some citizens from the area including the Member of Parliament for Assin South, Professor Dominic Fobih, who is also the Minister of Education Science and Sports, the Chief Executive of Zoomlion Company, the Kingdom Bookshop and Mr Robert Kutin, Managing Director of Allship Company, for sponsoring the vacation classes. Ms Arkoh said the focus of the classes was on the four core subjects- English, Mathematics, Social Studies and Integrated Science and techniques of shading names and answers on objective questions. She said though the elective subjects would be catered for, much attention would be on the core subjects in which if a student failed in one, there would be no placement for him or her in a Senior High School. Ms Arkoh said the Risograph machine supplied by the Ministry of Education to the District Directorates had been of great help to her in organizing the classes.
