Atick Yakubu, a National Youth Organizer hopeful of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has proposed a new leadership structure for TESCON to ensure equal representation and engagement across all tertiary institutions.
Speaking at the TESCON handing-over ceremony at the Presbyterian Training College, Akropong, Atick Yakubu highlighted concerns that, aside Traditional Public Universities, other tertiary institutions such as Private Universities, Technical Universities, Nursing and Midwifery Institutions, and Colleges of Education often feel left out in the affairs of the party’s youth wing.
According to him, this uneven attention has resulted in weaker TESCON structures in these institutions, affecting the NPP’s broader youth mobilization efforts. To address this issue, he announced a new structural initiative aimed at decentralizing TESCON leadership.
Proposed TESCON Leadership Structure
Under the proposed plan, the National TESCON Secretariat will have:
• A Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for Nursing & Midwifery Institutions – This position will be held by a representative from this sector to oversee TESCON activities in nursing and midwifery schools.
• A Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for Private Universities – This representative will be responsible for strengthening TESCON structures in private universities.
• A Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for Traditional & Technical Universities – This individual will oversee TESCON affairs in traditional and technical universities.
• A Deputy National TESCON Coordinator for Colleges of Education (Teacher Training Colleges) – This position will focus on coordinating TESCON activities in teacher training institutions.
The National TESCON Coordinator will be responsible for supervising the deputies while focusing on broader student-related elections, such as SRC elections and national student elections.
Rationale for the Initiative
Atick Yakubu stated that the introduction of sector-based deputy coordinators would ensure that all institutions receive the attention and resources they need to operate effectively.
“TESCON is the backbone of the NPP’s youth mobilization efforts, and every institution must be prioritized. With this structure, we will ensure that no institution is left behind,” he said.
His proposal, if implemented, could lead to a more inclusive and structured TESCON, strengthening the NPP’s engagement with students across all tertiary institutions.
Next Steps
As the NPP prepares for its next leadership elections, Atick Yakubu’s proposal is expected to spark discussions among party members, particularly within the youth wing. His vision for TESCON restructuring could become a key campaign issue as the party looks to enhance its student mobilization strategy ahead of future elections.
