The Australian High Commission in Ghana has announced that an impressive GH¢233,181.11 was raised from the 2024 Melbourne Cup Charity Ball.
The vibrant event, held on November 8, 2024, featured distinguished personalities such as boxing Hall of Famer Azumah Nelson, Grammy-nominated reggae artist Rocky Dawuni, and celebrated Ghanaian rapper M.anifest.
Guests enjoyed Melbourne Cup-themed cocktails on arrival, crab and snail races, an auction, a raffle, and trivia games with fantastic prizes donated by generous sponsors, including luxurious hotel stays, vouchers for international flights, and an 85-inch television. Throughout the evening, guests also participated in the popular Fashions on the Field parade and the musical chairs race.
At the end of the event, a record-breaking amount of GHS 233,181.11 was raised to support the activities of BASICS International, a Ghanaian non-profit organization that supports the education, healthcare, and development of essential life skills for vulnerable children and families in Chokor.
Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, Her Excellency Berenice Owen-Jones, emphasized the importance of the event to her and the commission.
She stated that giving back to underprivileged persons and communities in Ghana fills her with great pleasure and fulfillment.
“Each year, the Social Club at the Australian High Commission, supported by a small group of Australian and New Zealand expatriates, works hard to bring this event to life. We are deeply thankful for the diplomatic and business communities who support the charity ball through their attendance and the donation of prizes. Being able to give back to the local community in Accra is a privilege.”
Founder of BASICS International, Ms. Patricia Wilkins, expressed gratitude for the donation, saying, “This generosity from the community brings us closer to realizing our vision for BASICS International’s Camp Aklowah. This initiative will serve as a transformative space for children in Ghana, where they can grow, learn, and experience a safe and enriching environment away from their daily challenges. The impact of this event is profound, as it directly supports our mission to break cycles of poverty and provide new opportunities for our youth.”
