Avoid shoddy work - Assembly

Saltpond, July 8, GNA - Members of the Mfantseman District Assembly have expressed concern about shoddy work being done on the rehabilitation of Saltpond town roads.

At the first ordinary meeting of the Assembly at Saltpond they unanimously endorsed the abrogation of the two contracts. Mr Anthony Adjei-Kusi, Presiding Member appealed to the Central Regional Co-ordinating council (REC), which gave out the contracts to re-award them to competent contractors.

Mr Adjei-Kusi suggested to the RCC to ensure that districts the contracts would be executed are represented on the tender board. This, he said would prevent the "dumping" of incompetent contractors on the districts.

He said the situation where contracts were awarded to party functionaries, friends and relatives of people in authority whether qualified or not should stop.

How can we reduce poverty when a large amount of money is being spent on the maintenance of shoddy works by incompetent contractors, he asked.

They also appealed to the Ministry of Interior to improve conditions of the Police Stations in the district. The Assembly expressed regret that none of the six police stations in the district was housed in a permanent building.

They said some of the rented buildings housing the stations were in deplorable conditions, which exposed the lives of service personnel to danger.
