The Deputy Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, George Mireku Duker, has called for the immediate arrest of individuals and institutions that are indiscriminately awarding honorary degrees.

Hon. Mireku Duker, who also serves as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tarkwa-Nsuaem in the Western Region, expressed disgust over the rampant issuance of honorary degrees in the country. Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show, he stated that there is a team moving around, calling and honoring people with such degrees.

"They sew big church choir robes with big hats and put them on the individuals. This practice shouldn't be encouraged because it undermines the hard work of PhD students," he fumed.

He stressed, "Those people must be called to order. Arrest them if they have to be arrested... Such actions are unlawful because, before a person can be awarded a PhD, it must come from an accredited institution. So, if you are not even accredited to honor or award someone a PhD, you don't qualify to honor any individual as a PhD holder."
