The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has assured that this year's Basic Education Certificate Examinations (BECE) will proceed as scheduled.

According to the Public Relations Officer of WAEC, John Kapi, in an interview with Kwami Sefa Kayi on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo" morning show, about 90 percent of the Council's preparations are complete.

He is therefore optimistic that the BECE will be conducted for the students.

WAEC expects the government to pay over 90 million cedis to conduct the exams.

Reports indicate that WAEC has received only GH¢2.3 million out of the required GH¢95.83 million, which they consider insufficient to organize the exams scheduled to start from Monday, July 8, to July 15.

The examining body is demanding at least 50 percent of the total amount to commence the exams.

Due to this financial shortfall, there were concerns that the BECE might be canceled, but Mr. John Kapi has dispelled these concerns, stating, "We have completed the preparations... We can indeed do it. The printing and stationery are all ready."
