Dr. Bawumia presents Dr. Opoku Prempeh's name as NPP running mate

The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has reportedly chosen the Minister for Energy and Member of Parliament (MP) for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh (NAPO), as his running mate for the upcoming 2024 election.

According to a report from myjoyonline.com, the NPP flagbearer presented NAPO as his running mate during a meeting with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House on Tuesday, June 25, 2024.

JoyNews' Presidential Affairs correspondent, Elton Brobbey, stated that after the vice president presented his choice of running mate to President Akufo-Addo, the president offered advice and shared his thoughts before ultimately accepting Dr. Bawumia's choice.

"He was first elected to Parliament on June 1, 2008, and successfully re-elected in 2012, 2016, and 2020. He has served on the Health, Appointment, and Defence and Interior Committees of Parliament.

"In 2017, President Akufo-Addo appointed him as Education Minister, and he currently holds the position of Energy Minister. His name is Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, also known as NAPO," the journalist reported.

About Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh:

Matthew Opoku Prempeh, born May 23, 1968, is the current Minister for Energy of Ghana.

As a Ghanaian parliamentarian, he represents Manhyia South in Kumasi, having formerly represented Manhyia. He was first elected to Parliament in 2008 and is a member of the New Patriotic Party.

In 2016, he was re-elected with 35,958 votes, or 87.17% of the votes cast in the district. He won the Manhyia South again in the 2020 parliamentary election.

He was born on May 23, 1968. Prempeh studied Human Biology and Medicine at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, later continuing post-graduate studies at the Netherlands Institute of Health Sciences and the Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.

Prior to Parliament, he served as CEO of Keyedmap Security Services Limited from 2004 to 2009 and as a member of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of the United Kingdom from 1999 to 2003. He is also a medical doctor and health worker.

He identifies as a Christian and is a nephew of the former Ghanaian President, John Kufuor. He is divorced.

In May 2017, President Nana Akufo-Addo named Matthew Opoku Prempeh as part of nineteen ministers who would form his cabinet, as the Minister for Education.

He was appointed by President Akufo-Addo, in his second term, as Minister for Energy.
