Babatokuma expresses concern about accidents in the town

Sunyani, Aug 26, GNA - Twenty-two people lost their lives in motor accidents between 2000 and August 22, 2005 at Babatokuma in the Kintampo North District of Brong-Ahafo Region.

Nana Kwaku Dankwah, Chief of Felinyoa in the Mo Traditional Area, and Mr Abdulai Alhassan, Assembly Member for Babatokuma, said this at a press conference in Sunyani on Friday. The press conference was aimed at expressing the people's concern over the rampant killing of people by drivers who ply the Kintampo/Tamale trunk road.

The people on March 17 this year sent a letter to the Director of Ghana Highways Authority complaining about the rampant killing of people at Babatokuma on the Kintampo-Tamale Highway. Nana Dankwa and Mr Alhassan said out of the 22 people killed through motor accidents from 2000 to date, 10 of them occurred from October 2004 to August 22 this year.

They suggested the need for moving the GHA tollbooth at Suronuase to Babatokuma so that vehicles would limit their speed in the town.

"Placing a police barrier in the town will also help to check over-speeding by drivers on the trunk road can also reverse the trend, not forgetting markings of a Zebra Crossing in some parts of the road near the market", they said.
