Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the Vice President and flag bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), recently unveiled a promising initiative aimed at addressing the critical infrastructural deficit in Ghana’s public tertiary institutions.

During the manifesto launch held at GSTS Takoradi on August 18, 2024, Dr. Bawumia pledged to increase the stock of student accommodation across public universities and other tertiary institutions.

This move is expected to tackle the persistent housing shortage on campuses and make accommodation more affordable for students.

The Educate Africa Institute (EAI) has acknowledged that the proposed initiative is a positive step toward resolving the significant infrastructural challenges faced by these institutions.

According to EAI With many universities grappling with inadequate housing facilities, Dr. Bawumia's commitment to expanding student accommodation is timely and necessary.

The EAI asserted that the initiative could greatly enhance the living conditions of students and contribute to a more conducive learning environment.

EAI however, raised concerns about Dr. Bawumia’s reliability based on his track record.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of EAI, William Boadi the Vice President's past promises, including the provision of free Wi-Fi on campuses and the industrialization of Ghana to stimulate economic growth, remain largely unfulfilled.

He added that the free Wi-Fi initiative, in particular, was highly anticipated but failed to materialize, while the promised industrialization has not yielded the expected economic improvements.

Given these unmet promises, he expressed skepticism about whether Dr. Bawumia will deliver on his current commitment.

The EAI further urged voters to critically assess Dr. Bawumia's track record and the feasibility of his promises.
