The Vice President of Ghana and the 2024 Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, is pushing for significant reforms in the renewal processes of driver's licenses in the country.

Currently, Ghanaian driver's licenses must be renewed every two years, a system Dr. Bawumia believes is overly burdensome for motorists.

In contrast to passports, which are renewed every ten years, the two-year renewal cycle for driver's licenses has led to frequent harassment of drivers by officials from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) and the police over non-renewal issues.

Speaking to chiefs and stakeholders in Boadua within the Akwatia Constituency in the Eastern Region, Dr. Bawumia argued that the existing system is inconvenient and should be reformed to allow for longer renewal periods, similar to passports.

“Drivers are here. Today, the driver's license expires every two years. Let us extend it, be it 8 years or 10 years. Let us make sure you can have a driver's license without having to renew it every year. It does not make sense, and so by the grace of God we would make changes,” myjoyonline.com quoted Dr. Bawumia as having said.
