The Deputy Minister of Information, Sylvester Tetteh, has refuted assertions that a supposed report by the National Bureau of Investigation (NIB) was conducted to help the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, choose his running mate for the pending elections.
According to him, Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia does not need any research to choose the person who will partner him for the December 7, 2024, polls because he has good knowledge of the party members.
He reiterated that per the laws of the NPP, Dr. Bawumia, as the leader of the party and flagbearer, has all the power to choose the person he wants as his running mate and has not engaged any outfit to conduct any research on his behalf.
"The mandate for the selection of the running mate of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is the sole prerogative of the flagbearer, and the flagbearer has not ceded that authority to any group or institution for assistance.
"In any case, Dr. Bawumia has worked for the party since 2008 and has risen through the ranks to become vice president. Do you think he does not know NPP members and he needs assistance? No, it is not true," he said in Twi in an interview on Neat FM on June 22, 2024.
He added, "Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia's exposure, understanding, experience, and knowledge of every single individual in this party is enough for him to make a selection. It is enough to make a selection, and the party would support him."
The Deputy Minister of Information, who is also the Member of Parliament for the Bortianor Ngleshie Amanfro Constituency, also noted that the supposed NIB survey, which put the Minister for Energy and MP for Manhyia South, Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, as the preferred vice-presidential candidate of the NPP, is fake.
"It is not true that the National Investigation Bureau has conducted such research," he added.
He cautioned against the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to generate fake news regarding the 2024 polls, adding that it is a major challenge that has to be dealt with.
