The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Parliamentary Candidate for Ketu North, Edem Agbana, has called on the Peace Council and other Civil Society Organisations to actively engage in ensuring that Ghana has a credible voters register ahead of the 2024 general elections.
Speaking in a media interview on Tuesday, September 17, Agbana criticised these bodies for their perceived silence on the ongoing concerns raised by the NDC regarding the accuracy of the electoral roll.
Agbana accused the Peace Council and similar organisations of being hypocritical, stating that their current inactions contradict their supposed mandate of safeguarding the country’s democracy.
He emphasised the importance of a transparent and credible electoral process, stressing that it is essential for the peace and stability of Ghana.
According to him, ignoring such issues could lead to tension in the upcoming elections.
"In all of this, the people I am most disappointed in are the Peace Council and those clergymen calling for peace. Peace is an outcome of many processes and they must be calling for a credible register and not only asking us to sign any peace pact," he said.
He further noted that the NDC has identified several issues with the current voter register, including illegal transfers and bloating, which undermine public confidence in the electoral process.
Edem Agbana further urged the CSOs in the country to prioritise the integrity of the electoral roll and support calls for a forensic audit to address these concerns.
