A swarm of bees in the afternoon of Tuesday invaded the premises of the Hohoe Sonrise Christian Academy School and its neighbourhood, stinging some learners, staff, and some residents, businessmen, and women in the surrounding area.

Dr. Mark Nutsukpui, proprietor of the school, said the incident occurred when some boys from the neighborhood went to harvest honey in one of the trees closer to the school.

He said their unsuccessful attempt unleashed the bees in the neighbourhood, which disrupted not only school hours but also nearby businesses.

Dr. Nutsukpui said some learners, staff, residents, and sellers suffered stings from the invaded bees, adding that the netting decorations of the school’s classrooms had reduced the invasion to a minimum.

He said the timely response of the Fire and Ambulance Service salvaged the situation, and his checks showed that no casualty was recorded.

Dr. Nutsukpui said the school had always and would continue to put in measures to protect learners.

The situation has also disrupted the ongoing examination being written by learners.

Divisional Officer III (ADOIII) Bismark Hosu-Porbley, Hohoe Municipal Fire Commander, said it was important for the public to be informed and educated on bees’ attacks.

He said any individual or people chased by bees should remove their clothes and use them to cover their heads.

DOIII Hosu-Porbley urged individuals and institutions to frequently check their surroundings and identify the presence of bees and other reptiles as well as carry out fumigation from time to time.

He advised people from honey harvest if they lacked the expertise.
