Big Shake Up In NDC

Information available to The Independent indicates that the National Democratic Congress(NDC) is all poised to restore its former position within the next four years.

The first consideration in the party's quest to regain power, which chieftains in the NDC claim is temporarily occupied by the New Patriotic Party(NPP) is to look at itself from within. "We are seriously considering the internal democratic structures in the NDC to replace the consensus building which we believe caused us dearly in the December polls", one official hinted The Independent.

According to the official concerns so far raised by the youth and the regional branches of the party to work on the party's internal democracy are seriously being considered by the party hierarchy.

The youth wing of the NDC at a press conference about a month ago expressed their strongest desire for the introduction of internal democratic processes in the NDC. Signs picked up by The Independent searchlight show that the youth are not the least compromising their stance and are preparing a memorandum on the issue to be presented to the party.

Informed sources within the youth wing hinted The Independent that the memorandum should be ready by next month.

The concern of the youth is buoyed by actions of the regional and district branches of the NDC who fired the first salvo in the aftermath of the December elections urging the leadership of the party to give a serious consideration to the party's internal democratic processes.

Those concerned do not appear to renege on their stance . They have issued an ultimatum to the party's chieftains threatening to break away from the party if their demand is not heeded to.

Their hard-line stance is apparently premised on undercover manoeuvres being made by some section of the party, to have their favourites who competed and lost the December polls retained, without due process to popular mandate from the party's members.

"We are not opposed to any candidate. All that we are saying is that such a candidate should have the popular mandate of the party", another of the party's men who says he supports the youth said.

Our Investigations have established that some elements in the party have turned the party's research and strategic office headed by Sam Garbah at Osu into a secret meeting place, where the decision to have certain individuals in the party retained unopposed are taken.

But the youth and members of the party's regional branches have vowed to resist any such move.

A member of the youth wing who says their actions are backed by some of the gurus, was however quick to point out that if the party accepts any proposal short of instilling internal democracy in the selection process, they may be compelled to join any party that would address their concern.

Although most of the agitators who The Independent talked to ruled out the possibility of joining the NPP, they showed some level of tolerance for the other minority parties especially the Reform Party and the Convention Peoples Party.

Members of the National Reform Party were the first to raise the issue of lack of internal democracy in the NDC.

As the party failed to address their concern the Goosie-led Reformers broke away to form their own party and contested the December polls.

The party also lost a number of its Members of Parliament because the party's leadership did not heed to popular demand to change some of the MP's who were accused of being arrogant.

The party paid dearly for the contempt it showed for its constituents some of who travelled from the regions to register their protests at the manner the party was imposing candidates on them.
