Akyem Oda, Feb. 22, GNA- The biggest tree in West Africa, popularly called "The Big Tree" located at Akyem Aprokumasi, in the Birim South District of the Eastern Region is to be developed into a tourist attraction site.
As part of the programme, being undertaking by the Ministry of Tourism and Modernization of the Capital City, a stakeholder's workshop was organized on Monday at Akyem Oda for 60 participants including chiefs, heads of department, assembly members and opinion leaders. In an address, the acting District Chief Executive, Mr Yaw Amprofi, said the proposed site would lead to wealth creation and generate revenue for the District Assembly and the Ministry.
He appealed to communities living around the tree to take good care of the vegetation around it and refrain from the habit of removing the back of the tree for herbal medicine.
Mr Joseph B. Lomo-Mainoo, a Tourist Planner, called on the communities to help prevent illegal felling of trees in the area. Ms Victoria Adu, an Assembly Member for Akyem Aboabo, who chaired the function, told the participants that the successful implementation of the project would depend to a large extend on their hard work and cooperation.
