NPP supporters at Bomaa in the Tano North District in the Brong Ahafo Region, defied church service last Sunday and hit the streets in demonstration against the renomination and sudden confirmation of Mr Nicholas Anane Agyei as the District Chief Executive for Tano North.
The demonstrators argue that political power is being over concentrated at Duayaw Nkwanta and that if president Kuffour does not replace Anane Agyei as the DCE, all the towns and villages apart from DuayawNkwanta that make up the Tano North district, will forever remain hostile to the NPP.
A spokesperson for the aggrieved party supporters, Paul K. Twumasi, told Space FM that when the Tano North District was created, it agreed that the capital would be cited at Duayaw Nkwanta, so that some positions such as the DCE would go to other towns like Bomaa, Tanoso, Yamfo and other towns and villages in the district.
He further noted that the Brong Ahafo Regional Minister, Nana Kwadwo Seinti is from Duayaw Nkwanta, the security advisor to the president if also from Duayaw Nkwanta, so to nominate and confirm someone from the same Duayaw Nkwanta as DCE amounts to ?over concentration of political power at Duayaw Nkwanta?
Mr Twumasi continued that they were therefore totally shocked when it was announced on radio and TV that Anane Agyei had been renominated as the DCE.
The spokesman pointed out that it was the expectation of every single person in the area that the president would pick somebody outside Duayaw Nkwanta as the DCE.
But what perhaps has taken the entire district by a surprise is the sudden confirmation of Anane Agyei by the Assembly. He polled 24 votes with only one against.
The demonstrators carried a number of placards some of which read; ?Tano North is not the property of Gabby, Debrah?, ?Mr President, please listen to voices of the grassroots?, ?Presiding member of Tano North assembly is slated for court soon for ignoring standing orders of the assembly?, ?Anane Agyei is very arrogant?, ?There is over concentration of political power at Duayaw Nkwanta?, ?NPP will die in 2008 in the Tano North District?, ?Assemblymen, don?t follow money?, ?DuayawNkwanta is not the only town in Tano North?.
