In solidarity with fighting the canker of breast cancer this October, Breast Care International (BCI) in partnership with Delta Air Lines held its annual health initiative, “Walk for the Cure” under the theme, “Breaking the Myth, Fighting for the Cure” on Saturday, 7 October at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA).

The health walk was followed by a grand durbar with free breast screening and the full participation of health stakeholders across the globe and renowned musicians. There were special performances from survivors of breast cancer and their babies to raise funds.

Miss Eloina Baddoo, Delta’s Sales Manager for Ghana, Liberia, and Cote d'Ivoire, expressed her delight in supporting such a worthy cause. “Giving back to the markets we serve is deeply ingrained in Delta’s DNA. Breast cancer affects thousands of people in Ghana every year, predominantly women, and we are proud to support the life-saving work of Breast Care International.

Our partnership has screened more than 65,000 people and many suspected cases were found in the process. Our goal is to ensure more people have access to awareness and screening programs,” she stated.

Delta and BCI’s annual free breast screening takes place in various rural communities across the country and tackles education in eradicating the stigma of breast cancer victims, and the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease. Alternatively, a similar exercise will be at their premises at Nester Square, Accra all month long.

“At the center of our campaign is early detection and survivorship,” said Founder and President of Breast Cancer International, Dr. Beatrice Addai Wiafe. “It is vital that families and women afflicted by the life-threatening disease not rely on herbal concoctions and other unapproved methods of treatment. Those women who find a suspicious lump must contact their nearest health facility for immediate attention.”

Since 2016, Delta’s support to BCI to provide breast cancer awareness and screening programs has reached over 150,000 people and recorded about 2,000 suspected breast cancer cases. As a long-term partner of BCI Ghana, Delta is fully committed to creating a community where breast cancer is but a memory.

Delta's support for the cause includes campaigns on board flights from Accra to New York-JFK and beyond, where customers can savor special pink lemonade. Additionally, pink-themed merchandise including hats, scarves, and T-shirts are available for purchase, and all proceeds will fund BCRF’s research project.

The airline is has funded over 80 research projects with more than $20 million for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation (BCRF). Collaboratively, Delta people and its valuable customers have raised more than $24 million, including $3 million raised in 2022 to fund more research projects.
