Breast cancer expert demystifies the disease

Dr (Mrs) Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of Breast Care International (BCI) has urged women to defy myths and misconceptions associated with breast cancer and seek proper care at the health facilities.

She said they should also cultivate the habit of regular self examination of their breasts.

BCI, a Kumasi based organisation based has been spearheading awareness creation, care and treatment of the disease.

Dr Addai gave the advice in an interview with Ghana News Agency as Ghana joins the rest of the world to observe breast cancer month.

The World Health Organisation has designated October as breast cancer month to put the spotlight on the disease and the havoc, pain and anguish it is bringing to women across the globe.

Often referred to as the “Pink month”, the period is used to mobilise efforts to create the needed awareness about the ailment.

Dr Addai said breast cancer could be treated if reported for prompt medical care but warned that delays could be fatal.

Dr Addai, who is also the Chief Executive of Peace and Love Hospital, said given the disturbing effect of cancer on the health, economic and social lives of women there is an urgent need to marshal every available resource to wage war on the scourge.

She said as part of the month-long celebration, BCI would organise a breast cancer walk in Accra.

Dr Addai advised women take advantage of the event to visit health facilities and draw the attention of health care professionals to any abnormality they notice in the breast.
