Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of DOVVSU condemns maltreatment of children

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Sampson Agbeko, Brong-Ahafo Regional Commander of Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), has condemned maltreatment against children by relatives.

In reference to recent maltreatment against children in the country, DSP Agbeko in an interview with the Ghana News Agency in Sunyani said the Constitution frowned on children staying with any third party except their biological parents.

He pointed out that most children were maltreated because of the irresponsibility of some parents, and the situation could only be curbed when children lived with their parents.

DSP Agbeko said divorce had been another challenge to child maltreatment and appealed to parents to ensure that divorce became the last result and rather concentrated on the welfare of their children.

He said any decision taken should be in the interest of the welfare of children in order not to become nuisance in society, and urged parents to spend enough time with their children towards their proper upbringing as the best legacy parents could leave for their children.

DSP Agbeko observed that most children had become street children due to the negligent of their parents while some had become school drop-outs because their parents did not care about their education.

He appealed to the general public not to hesitate in reporting such abuses to the unit to reduce such violence in the Region.
