Four traders, three females and one male – narrowly escaped death when they were run over by a speeding mini bus at the Suame roundabout area in Kumasi, the Ashanti Regional capital.

The victims suffered serious injuries and they were rushed to the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) for medical attention.

The traders were reportedly plying their trade on the shoulder of the busy road when from nowhere, the mini bus, registered AS 5509-09, veered off the road and ran over the four.

The incident happened around 3pm last Wednesday, making scores of people at the area, mostly traders and pedestrians, fleeing to safety.

Richard Karikari, a member of the National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) who was at the scene, said it was a miracle that no deaths were recorded in what he described as a dangerous accident.

According to him, the Suame roundabout area was jam packed with traders busily transacting businesses when suddenly the near calamity struck.

He noted that the driver of the mini bus seemed to have lost control of the vehicle, as he veered from the main road in a dangerous fashion.

“It was like a Hollywood movie as the vehicle ran over the poor traders,” he stated.

Mr Karikari said some of the traders that saw the bus coming towards their direction quickly left their wares behind and raced to safety.

According to him, the four victims did not see the vehicle coming and that’s why they were hit by it.

Karikari disclosed that the driver of the vehicle, who was arrested by the police, claimed that he saw a thick smoke emanating from the engine of his bus and frightened by that, he lost control of the vehicle.
