Businesswoman arraigned over tax default

A spare parts dealer at the Suame Magazine in Kumasi has appeared before a Circuit Court over tax default.

Doris Aboraah reportedly owes the state a total of GHC155,672.54 in unpaid tax.

She is facing charges of failure to pay tax, impeding tax administration and causing damage to the property of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

The accused pleaded not guilty and was granted GHC20,000 bail with one surety to be justified.

The court, presided over by Mrs. Afua Adu Amankwaah, additionally ordered that she reported every Friday to the police investigator handling the case.
Doris would make her next appearance on January 21.

Police Chief Inspector Akowuah said the complainant is a Tax Administrator of the GRA and had on September 16, led a tax mobilization task force to lock up a shop operated by the accused.

She would have none of that, broke the padlocks and continued with her trading activities.

The prosecution said the team returned a month later to once again shut the shop but she fiercely resisted, leading to her arrest by police personnel, accompanying the tax officers.
