Former national team captain C.K. Akunnor has no illusions at all that the 23-man squad submitted by Serbian tactician Goran Stevanovic to the Confederation of African Football (CAF) on Wednesday is the finest the at the nation’s disposal at the moment. Plavi, as Stevanovic is fondly called, excluded domestic league hitman Emmanuel Baffour and Korea based Derek Asamoah from the initial 25-man squad for Africa’s mega football party.
CK, a veteran of 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2000 Nations’ Cups, albeit all without success, believes the team selected by Plavi have a very good chance of ending the country’s wait for a first African Cup triumph since 1982.
“For me, the squad is the best for Ghana at this point in time and we should believe in them. I was skeptical when they were going to Angola two years ago but they went all the way to the final. I think this team can do even better,” Akunnor told Joy FM.
The former Black Stars captain added: “I think we should be rather positive and not negative. We should be positive minded, believe and we can go all the way.”
