The Ministry of Education will soon upgrade the Cape Coast and Tamale polytechnics to technical universities as part of government’s plan to convert polytechnics to technical universities.
A release to that effect signed by sector Minister Professor Naana Jane Opoku Agyemang said: “Following the reassessment report submitted on the Cape Coast Polytechnic and the Tamale Polytechnic, government has given executive approval for the two to be included in the upgrading.”
In all, eight polytechnics will be converted to technical universities by the end of September 2016. The conversion is in fulfilment of government’s pledge to upgrade polytechnics to degree-awarding technical institutions.
It will be recalled that at a stakeholders’ forum on January 6, 2016, participants unanimously agreed that the conversion should not be done for all polytechnics at a go, but in phases, based on an assessment of each polytechnic.
However, students of Cape Coast Polytechnic hit the streets to demonstrate against government when they were not included in the first phase of the conversion.
