CHRAJ Awards five for promoting free and just society

Enchi (W/R), March 20, GNA - The Western Region office of the Commission for Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) has honoured four institutions and an individual for their roles in promoting a free and just society.

The award was instituted by the CHRAJ to honour individuals, corporate organisations and institutions who have made outstanding contributions towards the promotion of human rights.

The Facilitator Award (District Assemblies Division) went to the Aowin-Suaman District Assembly while the Corporate Contributor Award (Public Sector) went to the Forest Products Inspection Division of the Forestry Commission.

The Corporate Contributor Award (Private Sector) went to Takoradi Flour Mills, the Individual Contributor award to Mr Kweku Osae Brenue, a legal practitioner, and the Media Facilitator Award to Twin City Radio. Mr Robert Quayson, Regional Director of CHRAJ, who presented the award to the Assembly, said the Commission, since its establishment under the 1992 constitution, had pursued its constitutional mandate of promoting social justice with diligence, conviction, credibility and humility.

The Commission's down to earth programmes and simple and easily accessible procedures of investigations, as well as its excellent human relations, he noted, had enabled it to fulfil its constitutional mandate and win the respect and support of the people of Ghana.

Mr Quayson said human rights are so fundamental to human life that everyone should assist in their promotion. "Since we made our final entry into the third millennium, it is our responsibility to assist the thousands of people in the Western Region to share in the national dream of a free and just society of equal opportunities for all."

Mr Solomon Appiah, District Chief Executive, assured the Commission that the Assembly would continue to make human rights and social justice a cardinal objective in its development programme.
