CIDA to assist Lawra District

Lawra (U/W), Dec. 30, GNA- The Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) is funding selected projects in the Lawra District under the District Wide Approach Project (DWAP) at a cost of 630 million cedis.

Besides that, the district would also benefit from eleven boreholes estimated at 524.2 million cedis.

Mr Sylvannus Ganfaa, Lawra District Chief Executive, who said this at Lawra during the ordinary session of the assembly, said his outfit was also constructing a dam at Kokoligu at a total cost of 983.6 million cedis.

He said although revenue mobilisation was not so impressive at the beginning, the Assembly hoped to exceed its target of 600 million cedis before the end of 2003.

Mr Ganfaa said the assembly had collected a total of 424.7 million cedis as internally generated revenue and was on the verge of recovering 270 million cedis from Ghana Telecom and Volta River Authority in respect of property rate.

He called on paramount chiefs in the districts to do best to fill the vacancies available to avoid chieftaincy and land disputes.

Mr Sahanun Mogtari, Upper West Regional Minister, called on chiefs and opinion leaders in the area to maintain peace and unity to give them the opportunity to organise development programmes.

He said the government was doing its best to fight poverty, disease and illiteracy, which to him, were the main impediments on development and would not tolerate any acts of hooliganism and disorder.

"In its attempt to ensure equal development for all citizens, government will not tolerate acts of hooliganism. It will rather urge you to tolerate one another and learn to live in peace with yourselves and your neighbours," he said.
