CIU donates to Borstal Home

The Council of Independent Universities (CIU) has donated assorted items worth GH¢3,000.00 to the Senior Correctional Centre, formerly the Borstal Home, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility.

The items included bags of rice, packs of sanitary tissue, boxes of bathing soap, milk and chocolate beverages, and biscuits.

Presenting them, Dr Osei K. Darkwa, President of the Ghana Technology University College, said the donation followed an appeal from authorities of the Centre.

He said: “Some of the children come from poor background making life a bit tougher for them over here, therefore we found it necessary to offer help to these future leaders of ours."

Dr Darkwa said CIU had put measures in place to offer scholarships to needy but brilliant inmates at the centre, especially those who will excel in the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations.

“Although, CIU will design ICT models and programmes to help the children in the area of hands-on skills, to add value to their career on the job market, it will also support them to the tertiary level”.

He also advised the children to study hard in order to become prominent citizens, and not to be discouraged by their present circumstances.

Madam Yamba Nkruma, Chief Superintendent of Prisons, who received the items on behalf of the children, expressed their profound gratitude to the Council, and assured it of proper usage of the items.
