In a bold move to enhance environmental sustainability and community well-being, the Centre for Local Governance Advocacy (CLGA) has called on the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) Administrator to include provisions for the re-use and recycling of plastic waste in its sharing formula to Parliament.

The plea comes in the wake of the successful implementation of CLGA's Adentan Waste to Wages (ADWAWA) project, which has significantly reduced plastic pollution and generated income for residents in Adentan Municipality.

CLGA believes that by integrating plastic waste management into the DACF formula, other districts can replicate Adentan's success, fostering a cleaner and more sustainable environment across the nation.

The CLGA, in a statement, noted that plastic pollution is not just a local issue but a national crisis that requires coordinated action. CLGA’s experience in Adentan has shown that with the right resources and community engagement, plastic waste can be turned into a valuable resource.

"It's time for the DACF Administrator to recognize the importance of this issue and allocate funds accordingly," the CLGA said in a statement.

"The DACF is a critical source of funding for local governments, aimed at promoting development and addressing pressing community needs. By including plastic reuse and recycling initiatives in the DACF formula, districts will be compelled to adopt sustainable waste management practices, leading to long-term environmental and economic benefits."

CLGA argues that integrating plastic waste management into the DACF formula is a visionary step that can transform our approach to waste management sustainability, aligning with global trends towards circular economies and positioning our country as a leader in environmental innovation.

The success of the ADWAWA project in Adentan Municipality serves as a powerful example of what can be achieved when communities come together with a shared vision.

By incorporating plastic reuse and recycling into the DACF formula, CLGA believes this success can be replicated nationwide, paving the way for a cleaner, greener, and more prosperous future for all.
