The Convention People’s Party (CPP) on Tuesday called on the Ghanaian electorate to use Election 2012 to wean the country of political parties whose policies have not benefitted the majority of the citizenry.
In a statement signed by Nii Armah Akomfrah, CPP Director of Communications and copied to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on the occasion of Ghana's 55th Independence Anniversary, the party said the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and New Patriotic Party (NPP) had failed the nation.
“We therefore call on all Ghanaians to use this occasion to reflect on our conditions as a nation and ask ourselves whether our politics, economy and society should continue to be dominated by the NPP and NDC that have presided over the sorry state of our people.
“To this end we ask Ghanaians to join the CPP, the party of true independence, progress and prosperity for all…we must vote out these parties in the December polls,” the statement stated.
The CPP said recent events in Ghana and Africa pointed to the need to redouble efforts to eliminate the causes of continued subjugation and underdevelopment.
The party explained that the ongoing exposure of corrupt practices showed that the Ghanaian and for that matter the African elite, instead of championing the cause of their people continued to work in the interest of foreign powers and narrow local interests.
“The forces of reaction appear to be gaining an upper hand over those of progress as is evident in the increasing mass of unemployed and under-employed, the huge housing deficit and above all, the yawning gap between rich and poor,” the CPP noted.
The statement recounted that the achievements of Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah were predicated on a change of mind-set, along with an appreciation of African history, culture and traditions in a dynamic way as represented in the concept of African personality.
“If today, the sterling contribution of Dr Nkrumah to this task has been so recognised as to make him Africa’s Man of the 20th Century as well as Africa’s Man of the Millennium, then it is a recognition of the enduring relevance of the key tenet,” the CPP emphasised.
Ghana, under the CPP, was quick to grasp the emergence of other forms of domination on the world political horizon and Dr Nkrumah took steps to ensure that Ghana was launched on the path toward economic independence.
The party recounted that from an initial stock of just over a thousand primary schools at the end of the Second World War, the CPP Government went on to build several thousands.
The CPP Government over the span of space also established many secondary schools and hospitals that came on stream to provide education and health for the people of the emerging nation, the statement added.
Other achievements of the CPP Government included the establishment of over 60 State corporations to provide training, skills and employment to the people of Ghana.
The CPP noted that the Ghanaian state stepped in where the private sector was weak to provide entrepreneurial leadership in a colonial economy that was oriented toward exporting what we produced and importing what we consumed.
The economic policy of the CPP Government was directed towards the creation of internal linkages and adding value to local produce with the ultimate objective to deliver the people from poverty, ignorance and disease.
The CPP was however, acutely aware that such a step could not be taken alone, especially when the colonial powers had structured the world economy and politics in such a way as to maintain their hold over the affairs of their ex-colonies, the statement said.
It recognised the need to boost intra-African trade and other exchanges and exploit the continent’s vast economic and commercial resources primarily to the benefit of the African people.
The CPP therefore, extends hearty greetings to all Ghanaians and Africans on the 55th anniversary of Ghana’s Independence which paved way for Africa’s liberation.
