Accra, Aug. 15, GNA - The Convention People's Party (CPP) on Monday urged the Government to satisfy the request of former employees of Ghana Airways promptly.
The CPP's position is based on the fact that the privileges at Ghana Airways were no different from what pertained at most international airlines in the world.
A statement signed by Mr Kosi Dedey, CPP Spokesman on Transportation and Tourism, criticised Parliament for its apathy towards the employees and called on them to rise up "to their responsibility and redeem the pride of the nation".
"The public must admit that the ultimate responsibility for the failure or success must rest with government and not the workers. At one time the good people of Ghana were told that the debt of Ghana Airways had been ring-fenced and a strategic partner was being sought. The next time we are told the Government has decided to liquidate the Airline." The CPP said the salaries of most of the employees at Ghana Airways were not different from what was enjoyed in most state-owned institutions.
"The public's attitude has also been strengthened by the numerous allegations of corruption levelled against some employees of the Airline.
"The CPP finds it unacceptable that after many years of service by employees, some of whom have served for as long as 40 years out of the 47 years of existence of the Airline, should be treated as villains, who have done nothing for this country."
The CPP appealed to the public to change its attitude towards the employees of the Airline and rather offer them moral support. The statement said the loss of a national carrier meant that the country had lost the opportunity to improve herself in an ever-changing technological world.
The CPP said it believed that the Government had the capacity to overhaul the fleet of the airline as other developed countries had done for their national carriers. 15 Aug. 05
