The Centre for Social Justice (CSJ) has extended its heartfelt congratulations to Dr. Sodzi Sodzi-Tettey, its immediate past Chairman, on his appointment as the Acting Chief Executive Officer of the National Vaccine Institute (NVI) by President John Mahama.

The announcement of Dr. Sodzi-Tettey as the new head of the NVI highlights his exceptional leadership and his pivotal role in advancing Ghana’s public health agenda.

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey’s appointment comes at a crucial time for Ghana as the nation seeks to establish self-reliance in vaccine production. With over two decades of experience in frontline medical practice, national health system improvements, and global health leadership, Dr. Sodzi-Tettey is uniquely qualified to lead the NVI.

The press statement issued on Monday, March 17, 2025, by Prof. Alex Manu, Executive Director of CSJ, congratulated the respected medical practitioner, noting:

“Dr. Sodzi-Tettey’s appointment is a fitting recognition of his exemplary leadership, strategic vision, and unwavering dedication to public health. He is exceptionally positioned to lead the NVI at this critical juncture.”

The Urgency of Local Vaccine Production

Ghana currently spends over $11 million annually on vaccine procurement, a significant financial burden that underscores the need for local vaccine manufacturing.

The CSJ stressed the high return on investment in vaccination, noting that for every GHS1 spent on vaccine procurement, the return is GHS54.

“With the decision to wean Ghana off donor support for vaccine procurement, we cannot afford lacklustre leadership in advancing vaccine development and manufacturing in Ghana,” the statement read.

Building a Robust Institution

The NVI, still in its early stages, requires strong foundational leadership to establish institutional frameworks, mobilize resources, and develop sustainable vaccine research and manufacturing capabilities, notes the CSJ, adding, Dr. Sodzi-Tettey’s proven track record in institution-building positions him as the ideal leader for this mission.

“Dr. Sodzi-Tettey’s instrumental role in national and global quality of healthcare leadership, including his work with the Institute for Healthcare Improvement and the founding of Ubora Quality Institute and the Centre for Social Justice, demonstrates his ability to transform bold ideas into impactful, high-functioning organizations,” the CSJ stated.

A Call for Collective Support

The CSJ called on all stakeholders, including government agencies, healthcare professionals, and international development partners, to rally behind the NVI’s mission.

“We commend President Mahama for this forward-thinking appointment and urge all stakeholders to lend their full support to the NVI’s mission,” the statement said. “We are confident that Dr. Sodzi-Tettey’s integrity, strategic acumen, and results-driven approach will ensure the success of this national endeavor.”

A Vision for the Future

As Dr. Sodzi-Tettey steps into his new role, the CSJ expressed optimism about the future of Ghana’s vaccine production capabilities.

“We look forward to seeing Dr. Sodzi-Tettey apply his proven leadership and visionary thinking in advancing Ghana’s self-reliance in vaccine development and health security,” the statement concluded.

Prof. Alex Manu added:

“Once again, we extend our warmest congratulations and best wishes for his success in this crucial role.”

Dr. Sodzi-Tettey’s appointment marks a significant step forward in Ghana’s journey toward health security and self-sufficiency, and the nation will undoubtedly be watching closely as he takes on this monumental challenge.
