CVCP assures university staff of new salaries this month

The Committee of Vice-Chancellors and Principals (CVCP) of the country's Universities have assured junior and senior staff that this month's salaries would reflect new scales.

This assurance is contained in a letter dated October 11, 2001 addressed to the General-Secretary of the Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU) of Trades Union Congress (TUC).

The letter signed by the CVCP secretary, Mr S.W. Opoku-Agyakwa was written after a meeting in Kumasi.

The meeting was held against the background of threats by the workers of the universities to embark upon an industrial action if their negotiated 15 per cent salary increase pproved by the Minister of Finance was not paid by Monday, October 15.

The CVCP said it would not be long before the salary arrears would also be paid to the workers.

Reacting to this latest development, Mr Dan Ayim Antwi, TEWU General Secretary, said he welcomed the CVCP's efforts and urged the Federation of University Senior Staff Associations of Ghana (FUSSAG) to suspend their intended industrial action.

Mr Antwi called on the authorities of the universities and colleges to expedite action on the payment of the new salaries as promised.
