Cancel planned demonstration teachers - urged

Saltpond (C/R), Oct 6, GNA - The General Secretary of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Mrs Irene Duncan Adanusa, has called on Teachers in the Mfansteman District to cancel their planned demonstration for improved conditions of service scheduled for Friday. Mr Joe Denteh, Mfansteman District Secretary of GNAT conveyed the appeal of the General Secretary when he read a letter from Mrs Duncan Adanusa to heads of Basic Schools at a meeting at Saltpond on Thursday. Among other things in the letter, she stated that the demonstration should be cancelled because successful agreement had been reached with government and the Forum made up of other organised Labour groups. She said the government represented by the Central Management Board (CMB) and the Civil Servants Association (CSA), GNAT, the Ghana Registered Nurses Association and the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG) reached the agreement.

The GNAT General Secretary stated that it was agreed that 11.5 per cent increase on the Ghana Universal Salary Structure (GUSS) should be given to workers forming the Forum as from the beginning of June this year.

She said that the new salary would be paid this month ending with arrears for one month.

One-month arrears would also be paid next month ending with the remaining arrears cleared by December. In the letter it was stated that a special allowance of 25 billion cedis would be paid to all members of the Forum every month starting from October for four months.

The GNAT General Secretary asked teachers not to do anything that can stall the agreement and bring the Association into disrepute and to rely on the leadership who would uphold their interest at all times. 6 Oct 05
