Carnage on the roads continues

Seven hundred and forty people were killed in motor accidents throughout the country between June and September 2003, a release from the National Road Safety Committee (NRSC) said on Friday.

The release, which was signed by Mr N. Arcton-Tettey, Information Officer of the Committee, said Ashanti Region recorded 205 deaths; Greater Accra, 135; Western Region 91 and Eastern Region, 90.

Seventy-eight souls each perished in motor accidents in the Volta and Central Regions during the period, while Upper West, Northern, Brong Ahafo and Upper East recorded, 18; 15; 14 and 11, in that order.

The statement said 5,493 persons received various degrees of injury in the accidents that involved 9,654 vehicles during the period under review.
