Accra, (Greater Accra) 10 Nov. Carson Products of West Africa, a subsidiary of South African-based manufacturers of Dark and Lovely hair kits, today launched 10 out of its 50 products in Accra. The products, some of which are already on the Ghanaian market, include DL 2000, Excelle, Dark and Natural, Beauty Beginnings, Magic, and Moisture Plus. In an address, Mr. John Totoe, Director of Sales and Marketing, noted that the importation of hair products from the United States should not rpt not be encouraged when the same products could be obtained at a cheaper price from Africa. ''This notwithstanding, we will maintain the same standards of the products in terms of quality''. The company has established a one million-dollar factory operating under the free zones in Accra to produce hair products for the West African market. The factory, which is due to be commissioned on November 20, is currently about 25 per cent operational with 50 employees producing hair relaxers. Mr. Totoe said that when the factory is fully operational, it will employ 150 workers, adding ''our level would be expected to increase to 5,000 dozens of relaxers a week". He said the factory will have a salon and a training centre where people already in the industry would have the opportunity of ''picking up'' additional skills. ''We also have a programme to establish training centres in the various regions to train new people.'' Mr. Totoe said fees to be charged at their training centres would be put back into the industry in terms of scholarships and grants for the trainees to study abroad or establish their own salons. He said a return ticket to South Africa will be given to the best hairdresser for next year, and asked hairdressers to be professional in their work. Mr. Morgan Makhubela, Technical Director of Carsons, asked hairdressers to take the interest of their clients seriously. ''Do well to educate your customers and they would keep coming to you,'' he said.
