President Akufo-Addo has been criticised for intentionally planning the announcement of the Special Prosecutor to coincide with probing into the cash-for-seat scandal that has rocked his government.

For a member of the NDC legal team, Abraham Amaliba, the timing of the president’s pronouncement, though “perfectly” executed, it was “disingenuous”.

Anti-corruption crusader, Mr. Martin Amidu who is a former Attorney General was Thursday appointed as the first Special Prosecutor to handle corruption cases mainly involving public office holders.

His nomination was announced on the first day of a parliamentary probe into claims that seats close to the president were sold to the highest bidders at a recent event in Accra.

Mr. Abraham Amaliba told Abena Tabi on TV3’s New Day, Saturday edition, the announcement by the president on Thursday was intentional to divert attention from “damning revelations” coming out of the probe.

He suggested, that singular action of the president does not support Akufo-Addo’s mantra that he is fighting corruption.

“What does that tell fair-minded Ghanaians… that the president and the presidency are not comfortable with the revelations and decided to throw in something to throw the revelations to the backburner.”

He was equally amazed that Mr. Amidu would accept the offer when he himself had previously criticised aspects of the Act that establishes his office.

He recalled the Special Prosecutor-designate bringing out a “stinker” on the Special Prosecutor Bill, citing unnamed cabal at the presidency whom he claimed tried to influence the Bill to their benefit

“I’m surprised that Martin Amidu accepted the appointment,” Amaliba said.
