Catholic University Opens in Brong Ahafo Next Year

A new Catholic University will soon be launched at Sunyani in the Brong Ahafo Region.

Speaking on the establishment of the university at Sunyani, the Registrar, Rev. Fr. George Kumi said admission to the university will be in September 2002, after release of the SSSCE.

He said the university will run many courses but from September 3, 2002 major courses would be offered at the university to access its performance.

He said among the three major courses, which would be offered at the university, are Theology, Philosophy and Information Science and Technology.

Since it could take the church a long time to finish the needed building on the land secured at Fiapre, he said, the Sunyani pastoral centre from September 2002 is going to be used to train people who will gain admission to the university.

He said at the moment the most important equipment have been provided at the pastoral centre for the smooth running of the school.

Explaining the policies of the school, F. George Kumi pointed out that admission to the university has nothing to do with one's religious affiliation where the Roman Catholic Church is going to dominate but will be based on the performance of individual students.

On his part, Rev. F. Albert Kuurie, acting Registrar in Accra said, it is the church's mission to provide primary, secondary, technical and vocational training for Ghanaians of every faith and background.

"Instead of merely contributing to the existing structures or building a parochial Catholic University, we wish to lead the creation of a new fully Ghanaian institution of excellence in moral and academic education" he contended.

He stated categorically that the ability of the church to set up the university in Ghana will allow the church to tap into the world-wide network of excellence "our ability together as Ghanaians to independently set up such a university will allow the Catholic church in Ghana to tap into world-wide network of excellent Catholic university" he advocated.
