Director of Operation of Ghana National Fire Service, Deputy Chief Officer Kweku Manu Afful has indicated that the service is still investigating the cause of Wednesday night’s fire at the Odawna market.

According to the Ghana National Fire Service the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained even though residents revealed that the fire was as a result of a gas explosion from some Nigerians who were cooking at the time the incident took place.

DCO Kweku Manu Afful was confident that the truth will be uncovered soon as his team will leave no stone unturned in their investigations.

Traders at the Odawna market lost thousands of Ghana cedis in wares as a result of the fire. No casualties were however recorded.

”In the past some fire outbreaks have really led to disastrous results, but this time a swift response from the fire service averted any outcome of such nature such as loss of lives,’’ DCO Kofi Manu Afful told GhanaWeb in an interview.

Market fires are quite common in Ghana, with some markets in major cities often experiencing more than one of such fire outbreaks.

About 80 shops were razed by the fire that gutted the Odawna market at Circle on Wednesday night.
