Central Region gets over 9,000 new voters

A total of 93,210 new eligible voters were registered in the Central Region during the Limited Voters Registration Exercise (LVRE) held in August 2014.

Out of the number, 36,417 were in the 18 years old category, with 25,121 in the 19 years old group, while 31,650 were 20 years and above category.

Mrs. Philomena Edusei, the Central Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC), who made this known to the Ghana News Agency (GNA) on Friday, said 50,114 males and 43,096 females were registered in the exercise.

According to her, the Awutu Senya East District recorded the highest new voters with 11,115 registrations, while Ekumfi had the lowest with 1,503.

Cape Coast District recorded 6,736, Komenda-Edina-Eguafo-Abrem had 5,916, Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese 3,387, Mfantseman 5,445, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam 4,267, Gomoa East, 7,561, Gomoa West 4,553, Effutu 3,104 and Awutu Senya West registered 4,441 new voters.

The rest are Agona West 5,290, Asikuma-Odoben-Brakwa 4,483, Assin North, 5,383, Assin South, 3,768, Twifo Hemang- Lower Denkyira 2,422, Twifo Atti Morkwa 3,475, Upper Denkyira East 4,001 and Upper Denkyira West recorded 2,988.

Mrs. Edusei said 128 persons had their ages, residence, nationality and state of mind challenged, but 51 were later acquitted by the various District Registration Review Committees, while 77 were disqualified.

She said the next step in the exercise was the exhibition of the voter registers for corrections and urged registered voters to cross-check their names when the register is opened.

The Limited Voters Registration Exercise was held for Ghanaians, who had attained the minimum voting age of 18 and those who were more than 18 years but were not registered in the last biometric registration exercise.
