A leading member of the Progressive People's Party (PPP) wants Charlotte Osei to step down as Chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

Reports indicate that there will be a hearing into the alleged power abuse and corruption scandals at the Electoral Commission (EC) on Monday, December 11, 2017.

EC Chairperson, Charlotte Osei and her deputies, Georgina Opoku-Amankwah in charge of Corporate Services together with Amadu Sulley who is also in charge of Operations at the Commission are expected to appear before a five-member Committee chaired by a Supreme Court Justice regarding separate petitions filed against them.

It could be recalled the EC Commissioners came under intense criticisms after the infighting between them in the corruption scandal against them.

Commenting on the issue on Peace FM's Kokrokoo, the PPP Aspiring National Chairman, Nana Ofori Owusu believes though the summoning of the Commissioners is in the right direction, it "behooves them to step aside for investigations into the allegations".

According to him, the Commissioners have brought the image of the EC into disrepute and so their stay in office will only worsen the situation.

He told host Kwami Sefa Kayi on Kokrokoo that the Commissioners should all be made to vacate their office to "help to cleanse the institution of the Electoral Commission because they’re the referees. And we will plead with them that they shouldn’t become players”.

He however commended the move by the Committee to summon the Commissioners for interrogation, saying it would help to address the issue.
