Chief calls for institution of scholarships for children of teachers

New Edubiase (Ash), Aug 19, GNA - A traditional ruler has suggested the institution of a scholarship scheme for children of teachers who accept to teach in remote and difficult areas of the country. He said the scheme could cater for them up to the senior secondary school level.

Nana Assiamah Guahyia Ababio, chief of New Edubiase in the Adansi South district of Ashanti, who made the suggestion, said the time when the reward of teachers was said to be in Heaven was gone and that teachers should have their reward here on earth now. Speaking at this year's teacher's awards day ceremony organised at New Edubiase recently by the Adansi South district education directorate, he said the institution of the scholarship scheme for the children of teachers will go a long way to also reduce the financial burden of rural teachers.

Nana Assiama Ababio said it would serve as a motivating factor to boost the moral of teachers to accept postings to the most deprived areas, arguing that if children of cocoa farmers enjoy scholarships, there was nothing wrong to institute one for the children of teachers. He called on the society, parents, stakeholders in education and children to show respect to teachers and stop insulting and assaulting them in their communities to enable teachers to continue to render their invaluable services to the country.

Nana Assiama Ababio also asked teachers to endeavour to improve upon their level of qualification to enable them impart confidently to the children they teach.
