The Chief of Ashaiman, Nii Annang Adzor, has issued a strong warning to drivers, particularly those operating VIP buses, to exercise utmost caution when driving along the Accra-Kumasi highway during slight downpours.

His caution comes in response to the increasing number of accidents that occur on this stretch of road during wet weather conditions.

Speaking at a media engagement aimed at sensitising drivers about road safety, Nii Annang Adzor emphasised the importance of vigilance, especially during rain showers.

"The Accra-Kumasi highway is a critical route connecting two major cities in Ghana, but it is also one of the most dangerous when the weather is unfavourable. I urge all drivers, particularly those transporting large numbers of passengers, to be extra careful during slight downpours. These conditions are known to make the roads slippery and visibility poor, which can easily lead to accidents," he noted.

Nii Adzor indicated that the frequent downpours along the highway create a perilous situation for drivers who may not be adequately prepared or who do not adjust their driving habits to suit the conditions.

Road accidents

"I need to touch on the concern about the number of lives lost due to road accidents, many of which could be avoided if drivers were more cautious. Every life is precious, and we cannot afford to lose any more lives to road accidents that could have been prevented with just a little more care and attention," he stated.

Education

He further appealed to the authorities to intensify their efforts in educating drivers about the dangers of driving during adverse weather conditions. "It is not enough to just warn drivers. I believe there must be continuous education and enforcement of traffic regulations to ensure that everyone on the road is safe," he explained.

Nii Adzor equally urged media houses to continue sensitising drivers and the general public on the importance of safe driving practices, particularly during the rainy season, saying, "Media practitioners must ensure that road accident awareness is championed and the necessary prominence is given to change the narrative."

He added that the caution given to VIP drivers is part of a broader effort to reduce road accidents and ensure the safety of passengers and other road users along the Accra-Kumasi highway.

"I urge all VIP drivers to prioritise safety and exercise patience on the roads, especially during challenging weather conditions. It is better to get your destinations safe than to be involved in accidents," he warned.
