Chief proposes national service for SHS graduates

Niator (U/W), Oct. 25, GNA - Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye II, the Acting President of the Zini Traditional Council, has proposed to the government to institute mandatory national service for Senior High School graduates instead of allowing them to sit at home or one year before continuing their education.

Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye, the Niator Divisional Chief in

the Sissala West District, said SHS graduates should be made to fill

in the vacancies created in the classrooms as a result of the lack of

teachers. He told the GNA in an interview that this would also contribute

in raising education standards especially in rural communities. Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye said the Sissala West District

performed poorly in the 2010 Basic Education Certificate

Examination (BECE). He mentioned inadequate teachers and educational materials,

lack of motivation for teachers in the rural communities as well as

indiscipline on the part of the students as some of the causes

contributing to the poor performance of students during

examinations. Kuoro Barecheh Nlowie Baninye appealed to chiefs, assembly

members, opinion leaders and teachers to collaborate and institute

measures that would curb such indiscipline in schools. He told chiefs to commit more resources towards the

development of education and appealed to the government to invest

more in education.
