Akatsi (V/R), July 2, Chiefs and landowners have been urged to release land to civil servants in their communities to enable them to cultivate community farms, using improved farming methods. Togbe Letsa Korba the second, Dufia of Akatsi, gave this advice in an interview with the GNA on the improved food situation in the Akatsi District. He hoped that the release of land to workers would enable them to produce more food to supplement their meagre salaries in feeding their families. Togbe Korba advised the civil servants to form strong and viable co-operatives and adopt improved farming methods to meet the food and raw material needs of the country. He warned that unless they adopted agro-forestry practices, the country would soon face shortage of arable land. On financial assistance, Togbe Korba urged the banking institutions to assist civil servants by granting them loans at the right time to enable them to step up food production. He advised them to also establish farmers' service centres to avail themselves of farm inputs. Togbe Korba appealed to the Ministry of Food and Agriculture to assist any group of civil servants engaged in community farming.
